Wells Fargo statements: download and convert
How to find Wells Fargo statements online, how many years each account type keeps, what Download Account Activity exports, and how to convert the PDF.

Wells Fargo statements live under Statements & Documents in Wells Fargo Online and the mobile app, one PDF per account per cycle. How far back they go depends on the product: up to seven years for checking, savings, mortgage and trust accounts, up to two years for credit cards and lines of credit, and up to twelve months for auto loans. Transactions can also be exported as CSV, Quicken or QuickBooks files from the account activity page, but that export reaches back months, not years. Details below were checked against wellsfargo.com in September 2026.
Downloading a statement PDF
On wellsfargo.com:
- Sign on and select the account.
- Open Statements & Documents.
- Choose the statement period. Wells Fargo lets you select one statement at a time.
- The PDF opens or downloads, depending on your browser. Save it with a descriptive name; Wells Fargo's own help suggests the pattern CheckingMarch2019.pdf and that is as good as any.
In the Wells Fargo Mobile app the path is the same: select the account, tap Statements & Documents, pick the month. Printing is easier from a computer.
Wells Fargo's help pages say the online statement is the same document as the mailed one and is considered official. That matters if you need it for a lender or a visa application: no stamp or branch visit is needed for most purposes.
How far back each account type goes
| Account type | Online statement history |
|---|---|
| Checking, savings and other deposit accounts | Up to 7 years |
| Home mortgage | Up to 7 years |
| Trust and managed investment accounts | Up to 7 years |
| Credit cards | Up to 2 years |
| Home equity lines, personal loans and lines of credit | Up to 2 years |
| Auto loans | Up to 12 months |
The exact span for your account is shown inside Statements & Documents. Two edge cases worth knowing: if you close an account, its statements stay available online for roughly 90 days after closure and then you have to request copies from customer service; and combined statements (checking and savings on one document) appear under the primary account, not under each account separately.
Card statements are the common trap. Two years sounds like plenty until you are asked for a three-year history in an audit. Download card statements as they arrive rather than assuming they will be there later.
Exporting transactions with Download Account Activity
For recent activity in spreadsheet form, Wells Fargo offers Download Account Activity from the account activity page (on older layouts it is under Manage Accounts).
- Choose the account.
- Set the date range. The page pre-fills the span that is available for that account.
- Choose the file format. Options include Comma Delimited (ASCII, Spreadsheet), which is a CSV, Quicken (Web Connect, .qfx) and QuickBooks (Web Connect, .qbo). Older layouts also listed Microsoft Money (OFX); do not count on it being there.
- Click Download.
The default range is the last 90 days. Depending on the account, you can extend it to around 18 months, which is also how far back the activity page itself searches on business accounts and how long check images are kept. Beyond that, the statement PDF is your only source.
Two things about the CSV catch people out. It has no header row, so the first transaction lands where Excel expects column names. And it has five columns: date, signed amount, an asterisk column, an empty column, and description. Withdrawals are negative. There is no running balance and no opening or closing figure, so you cannot check the file against anything without the statement beside it. That is the trade-off with any bank CSV export: fast to get, impossible to prove complete.
Converting a Wells Fargo PDF
Once you are past the 18-month window, or you need the statement itself to be the source of record, you convert the PDF.
Selecting the transaction table in the PDF and pasting into Excel usually gives you the Ending daily balance column merged into the description, and the deposits and withdrawals columns collapsed into one. It is workable for a single page. It is not workable for a year.
Acrobat's Export PDF to Excel keeps more of the column structure but splits two-line descriptions (common on Wells Fargo statements, where the second line carries a reference number) into separate rows.
A statement converter reads the PDF or a scan, reconstructs the table, and reconciles it: opening balance plus deposits minus withdrawals should equal the closing balance printed in the Activity summary. stmtai does this for Wells Fargo statements, highlights the first row that breaks the arithmetic if it does not balance, and exports Excel, CSV, QuickBooks .qbo or Xero CSV. Five pages are free without an account. The Wells Fargo statement to Excel page shows the layouts covered.
What is on a Wells Fargo statement
Checking
The first page carries the Activity summary: Beginning balance on the first day of the cycle, Deposits/Additions, Withdrawals/Subtractions, Ending balance on the last day, plus the account number and the statement period. Below it, the Transaction history table has these columns:
| Column | Notes |
|---|---|
| Date | Posting date, MM/DD |
| Check Number | Blank for anything that is not a check |
| Description | Often two lines; the second holds a reference or card number |
| Deposits/Additions | Positive amounts, money in |
| Withdrawals/Subtractions | Positive amounts, money out |
| Ending daily balance | Shown only on the last transaction of each day |
Money in and money out are separate columns, both unsigned. When converting to a single signed amount column, withdrawals need a minus sign added. Reversing that convention is the single most common cause of a statement that "does not balance" after conversion.
A Totals line under the table repeats the deposit and withdrawal sums from the summary, which gives you a second figure to check against. Then comes the Monthly service fee summary.
Savings
Same layout, with an Interest summary showing interest paid this period, year to date, and the APY earned.
Credit card
The summary lists Previous Balance, Payments, Other Credits, Purchases, Balance Transfers, Cash Advances, Fees Charged, Interest Charged and New Balance, followed by the minimum payment and due date. Transactions show a transaction date and a posting date, a reference number, description and amount.
Into QuickBooks or Xero
For the last 18 months, the QuickBooks Web Connect download from Wells Fargo opens straight into QuickBooks Desktop, and QuickBooks Online accepts the same .qbo file under Transactions, Upload from file. For older statements, convert the PDF and export .qbo; if QuickBooks refuses the file, the QBO checker will tell you which field is malformed.
Xero imports CSV only. The Wells Fargo CSV needs a header row added and the two junk columns removed before Xero will map it. The Xero import guide has the column order Xero expects.
Common problems
No statements appear for the account. Delivery preferences may be set to paper only. In Statements & Documents, open Manage Delivery Preferences and switch to online; statements appear from the next cycle. New accounts have no statement until the first cycle closes.
The CSV opens with a transaction in the header row. Expected; insert a row above and type your own headers.
Excel turns the date into text. Wells Fargo dates are month first. Set the column format to Date MDY in Text to Columns, or change the CSV import locale.
Withdrawals imported as deposits. The two-column layout got collapsed with the wrong sign. Check the sum of the withdrawals column against the Activity summary before importing anything.
Statement shows a transaction the activity page does not. The activity page covers 60 to 90 days including pending items; the statement covers a closed cycle and excludes pending. They are not meant to match on any given day.
