Convert European bank statements.
Checked to the cent, in EUR.

Continental European statements use a decimal comma and a point for thousands, which breaks any converter built for English-speaking banks, and each country has its own statement vocabulary. DATEV, Lexoffice, Pennylane, Exact and Moneybird expect a clean CSV, and Xero and QuickBooks are common for international businesses. These pages cover the banks we see most; camt.053 and MT940 files from corporate banking are a different matter and have their own guides.

European banks with their own page

Any other European bank or card issuer works the same way; these are the ones people ask about. Each page covers how to download the PDF, what the statement looks like and where the bank's own export falls short.

How European statements are laid out

Dates are day first: dd.mm.yyyy in Germany, dd/mm/yyyy in France and dd-mm-yyyy in the Netherlands, with a booking date (Buchungstag, Date) and a value date (Wert, Valeur, Valutadatum) on most rows. Amounts use a decimal comma and a point or space for thousands, in Soll and Haben, Débit and Crédit, or a single Bedrag column with an Af/Bij direction marker. Balances are printed per page (Kontostand, Solde, Saldo) or per row depending on the bank. IBANs and SEPA references (Verwendungszweck, mandate and end-to-end references) make descriptions long, and they are kept whole.

What to know before converting

  • Decimal commas and dd.mm.yyyy dates are read as the numbers and dates they are; the Excel and CSV exports use a decimal point and ISO dates so Excel treats them as values.
  • The Dutch Af/Bij column decides the sign at ING; a converter that ignores it treats everything as money out.
  • Revolut issues one statement per currency pocket; each is reconciled in its own currency and the QuickBooks export carries the matching currency code.
  • German Kontoauszüge print the Kontostand at the foot of each page rather than on each row; the check works from the opening and closing Kontostand and the rows between them.
  • For camt.053 XML or MT940 files from corporate banking, use the guides below; the converter reads PDF, image, CSV, QIF and OFX, not those two.

Who asks for statements, and in what form

Tax offices across the EU ask for statements in an audit, and the self-employed reconstruct a year from them for the income tax return; VAT-registered businesses reconcile deposits to invoices quarterly or monthly. Landlords, lenders and, for non-EU nationals, residence permit renewals ask for three to six months of statements.

Europe questions

Will a decimal comma be read as a thousands separator?

No. The statement's own convention is read from the whole document rather than one cell, and the balance check confirms it: if 1.234,56 were read as 1234.56 versus 1.23456 the running balance would fail on the first row. The exports normalise to a decimal point so Excel and accounting software see numbers.

Which export do DATEV and Lexoffice want?

Both import bank transactions from a CSV. Lexoffice maps the columns on import; for DATEV, the CSV is usually handed to the Steuerberater or loaded through DATEV Unternehmen online, which also maps columns. Use the plain CSV download, which has date, description, debit, credit, signed amount and balance columns.

Can I convert a statement in German, French or Dutch?

Yes. The statement is read as printed, whatever the language of the headings, and the descriptions stay in the original language. The output columns are the same for every bank, so a German and a French account sit side by side in one workbook with identical headings.
