OFX / QFX to CSV converter.
Read the file Excel cannot open.

Drop an .ofx, .qfx or .qbo file from your bank or accounting software. The transactions are read in your browser, shown in an editable table, and downloaded as CSV, Excel, Xero CSV or QuickBooks CSV. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Drop the file. Both SGML (OFX 1.x) and XML (OFX 2.x) layouts are read; the header block is not required.
  2. Currency, account id and the ledger balance are taken from the file and shown above the table.
  3. Each STMTTRN becomes a row: DTPOSTED as the date, NAME and MEMO joined as the description, TRNAMT as a signed amount.
  4. Edit a row if a description is truncated or a sign is wrong, then download CSV, Excel, Xero CSV or a .qbo.

What you get

  • CSV: Date, Description, Money out, Money in, Amount, Balance, Category. Opens cleanly in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets.
  • Excel: a Transactions sheet with the same columns plus a Summary sheet with totals by category (live formulas).
  • Xero CSV in the bank-import layout and a 3-column QuickBooks CSV.
  • QuickBooks .qbo when the source was a plain .ofx and you need Web Connect.

Reading OFX properly

OFX dates are YYYYMMDD with an optional time and time zone suffix; only the date part is kept. Amounts are plain numbers with a point decimal, money out negative. A duplicate MEMO equal to NAME is dropped so descriptions do not repeat. The OFX and QFX guide walks through the tags, and the QBO checker lists what QuickBooks objects to in a file.

Convert the PDF: the statement is read, reconciled against the printed balances, and the same CSV and Excel downloads are produced. The first five pages are free without an account.

OFX and QFX questions

What is the difference between .ofx, .qfx and .qbo?

All three are OFX files. .qfx adds a Quicken bank id and .qbo adds the INTU.BID header QuickBooks needs. The transaction list inside is the same, so this tool reads all three.

Excel opens my .ofx as one long line of tags.

OFX is SGML, not a table, so Excel has nothing to split on. Drop the file here and download the .csv or .xlsx; each STMTTRN becomes one row with date, description, amount and a category column.

Is the file uploaded?

No. The OFX is parsed by JavaScript in this tab and every download is generated there. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Where do the currency, account and closing balance come from?

CURDEF, ACCTID and LEDGERBAL in the file. The currency is fixed from the file; the account type follows whether the file uses the bank or credit-card message set. The ledger balance becomes the closing balance in the Excel summary.

Why does the balance check say "could not verify"?

OFX files carry one closing balance but no opening balance and no per-row balance, so the equation opening + in − out = closing cannot be checked from the file alone. Type the opening balance from your statement in the options and the check runs.

Can I turn an .ofx into a .qbo for QuickBooks?

Yes. After the file loads, QuickBooks (.qbo) is one of the download buttons. Set the account type and last four digits first so QuickBooks can match the account.
