Convert Canadian bank statements.
Checked to the cent, in CAD.
Canadian statements come in two languages and, at TD, in an unusual column order, and the big five banks cap their transaction downloads at a few weeks or months. Bookkeepers catching up a year for a CRA request or a GST/HST filing end up with twelve PDFs per account. These pages describe each bank's statement and where the bank's own export runs out.

Canadian banks with their own page
Any other Canadian bank or card issuer works the same way; these are the ones people ask about. Each page covers how to download the PDF, what the statement looks like and where the bank's own export falls short.
How Canadian statements are laid out
Dates are shown as day and short month with no year on most statements, with the year fixed by the period in the header; TD compresses them to JAN02 and puts the date column after the amounts. Amounts use a point for decimals and a comma for thousands on English statements; Desjardins and French-language National Bank statements use French month abbreviations and print a negative balance with a trailing minus. Every major bank prints a balance on each row and an opening and closing balance line, so the running check is exact. US dollar accounts get a separate statement in the same layout, so name the files by currency.
What to know before converting
- Cheque image pages are appended to business statements at RBC, National Bank and others; they carry no rows.
- Interac e-Transfer descriptions include a partial reference rather than the sender's name at several banks; the reference is kept whole.
- Desjardins issues one relevé per folio with chequing, savings and line of credit stacked; print one account's pages to a separate PDF before uploading.
- Bank exports reach back 45 days at TD, a few months at BMO and CIBC and about 25 months at National Bank for business; statement archives reach seven years.
- Monthly plan fees and Interac fees appear as their own lines and are debits like any other.
Who asks for statements, and in what form
The CRA asks for statements during a review and expects self-employed filers to support the T2125 with them; GST/HST registrants need the deposits to agree with reported sales. Mortgage brokers want 90 days of statements, and lenders financing a small business want a year. Statements in French are as acceptable as English for all of it.

Canada questions
Do French-language statements convert the same way?
Yes. Retrait, Dépôt and Solde land in the same debit, credit and balance columns as Withdrawal, Deposit and Balance, and the check from the opening Solde to the closing one runs the same way. Descriptions stay in French. A batch with French and English months comes out with identical column headings.
Why is the TD statement's date column in the middle of the row?
That is TD's Statement of Account layout: Description, Withdrawals, Deposits, Date, Balance. Columns are read by their headings rather than their position, so the date is picked up wherever it sits and the output uses the usual Date, Description, Debit, Credit, Balance order.
Which file does Sage 50 Canada want?
Sage 50 imports a CSV or an OFX file through Bank Services. Use the plain CSV download, which has Date, Description, Money Out, Money In, Amount and Balance columns for Sage to map. For QuickBooks Online or Desktop use the .qbo, which imports through Web Connect with a stable ID on each transaction.
