Exports and imports
Import a converted statement into Xero
The Xero CSV download is already in the layout Xero expects. What the columns contain and how to import it.
Last reviewed
Xero does not read QuickBooks .qbo files. Use the Xero download on the results page, which is a CSV in Xero's bank statement import layout.
What is in the file
Five columns, one row per transaction:
- Date, written as DD/MM/YYYY, which Xero accepts in every region.
- Amount, signed: negative for money out, positive for money in.
- Payee, the first 100 characters of the description.
- Description, the full description.
- Reference, left blank.
Categories are not included. Xero applies its own bank rules when it imports statement lines and would not use ours.
Importing
In Xero, open the bank account, choose Manage Account, then Import a Statement, and upload the file. Because the columns already match, you should not need to map them. If Xero asks about the date format, choose day first.
Before you download
Look at the balance check on the results page. If it is red, the total of the rows does not match the printed closing balance. Fix the flagged row first, then download, so Xero receives the same numbers your bank printed. See Fix a flagged row.
Several statements
When you convert a batch, the Download everything panel has All Xero CSVs (.zip): one bank-import CSV per statement, named after the statement. Unzip it and import the files one after another into the matching bank account in Xero. You can also open a statement in the list for its own Xero file.
