Troubleshooting

Fix a flagged row in the transaction table

How to edit cells, swap money in and out, add or remove rows, compare with the original page, and save the corrected table.

Last reviewed

When the balance check is red, the first row that does not add up is marked with a red dot and a red background, and the check box has a Jump to row link. Rows the reader was unsure about are shaded amber. Start with the red one.

See the original next to the table

Press Show original beside table. The original page opens on the right, at the page the flagged row came from. Clicking any row moves the preview to that row's page. On a wide screen the preview opens by itself when a row is flagged.

The preview comes from a copy of your file kept in your browser for this purpose. It is not uploaded again and the server copy was deleted when processing finished.

Editing a cell

Click a cell to edit it. Press Enter to keep the change or Escape to cancel. You can edit the date (as YYYY-MM-DD), the description, money out, money in and the balance. Clearing a balance cell leaves it blank.

The category column is a dropdown. The value is a suggestion drawn from the description. Change it if it is wrong, or choose the dash for none.

Categories you set are remembered

When you change a category, the payee on that row (the description with dates, reference and card numbers removed) is remembered with the category you chose. If other rows in the same table name the same payee, a prompt offers to set them too. On later statements, rows naming a remembered payee get that category as soon as the table opens, with a note saying how many were set and an Undo link. Clearing a category to the dash forgets the payee.

The list is kept in your browser only: it is not sent to us, not shared between your devices, and disappears if you clear the site's data. Your account page shows how many payees are remembered and has a button to forget them all. The sample page does not remember anything.

Row tools

At the right of each row:

  • ⇄ swaps money in and money out for that row. This is the most common fix. The check often names the row it thinks is swapped.
    • inserts a blank row below, ready to type into, for a transaction the reader missed.
  • ✕ removes the row, for a line that was not a transaction.

Above the table, Swap all in/out flips every row at once, for statements where the columns were read the wrong way round, and Undo all edits returns the table to the saved version.

Watch the check

The balance check recalculates as you edit and shows after your edits. When it turns green you are done.

Saving

Press Save changes. Downloads and your conversion history then use the corrected table. Until you save, the page warns that unsaved edits are lost if you leave. Edits on the sample page are not saved.

You can download at any time, but a note appears when the numbers do not tie out yet.
