Convert OFX to Excel Free.
In your browser, nothing uploaded.

An .ofx from online banking is a tagged file, not a table, so Excel either shows it as one text column (OFX 1.x) or scatters it across nested columns (OFX 2.x). The free OFX / QFX to CSV tool reads the file in your browser and writes an .xlsx with a Transactions sheet and a Summary sheet with totals by category. Nothing is uploaded.

How to convert OFX to Excel

  1. Open the free OFX / QFX to CSV tool and drop the .ofx. Both the SGML layout of OFX 1.x and the XML layout of OFX 2.x are read; the header block is not required, and the file is not uploaded.
  2. Check the currency, account id and ledger balance shown above the table. They come from CURDEF, ACCTID and LEDGERBAL in the file; the account type follows whether the file uses the bank or the credit-card message set.
  3. Look over the rows. Each STMTTRN becomes one line with DTPOSTED as the date, NAME and MEMO joined as the description and TRNAMT as a signed amount, money out negative. Edit a row if a description is cut short or a sign looks wrong.
  4. Download Excel. The workbook has a Transactions sheet with Date, Description, Money out, Money in, Amount, Balance and Category, and a Summary sheet whose totals by category are live formulas. CSV, Xero CSV and a .qbo are offered beside it.

What is in an OFX file

OFX, Open Financial Exchange, is the format behind most download-to-Quicken and download-to-QuickBooks buttons in online banking. OFX 1.x is SGML with optional closing tags and a plain-text header block; OFX 2.x is XML with the same tags. A statement file has a sign-on block, an account block with CURDEF and ACCTID, a BANKTRANLIST of STMTTRN records (DTPOSTED, TRNAMT, FITID, NAME, MEMO) and a LEDGERBAL closing balance. There is no opening balance element.

What an Excel file holds

An .xlsx workbook holds typed cells, so amounts can be numbers rather than text and dates can be dates, which is what makes SUM, pivot tables and lookups work. The workbook written here has a Transactions sheet with Date, Description, Money out, Money in, Amount, Balance and Category, and a Summary sheet whose totals by category are live formulas, so relabelling a category updates the totals.

OFX to Excel questions

Why does Excel show my .ofx as one column?

OFX 1.x is SGML with optional closing tags, which no XML or CSV reader accepts, so Excel treats the whole file as text. OFX 2.x is XML and does open through Data, From XML, but the nested tags land in columns that are hard to use. A converted workbook has one row per transaction.

Are the amounts numbers or text in the workbook?

Numbers, with money out negative in the Amount column and split into Money out and Money in columns as well, so SUM, pivot tables and lookups work without cleaning. Dates are date cells taken from DTPOSTED with the time and time zone suffix dropped.

Why does the balance check say it could not verify?

OFX files carry one closing balance in LEDGERBAL but no opening balance and no per-row balance, so the equation opening plus money in minus money out equals closing cannot be checked from the file alone. Type the opening balance from your statement in the options and the check runs.

Is the file uploaded?

No. The file is parsed by JavaScript in your tab and every download is generated there. Nothing is sent to a server, so the account number inside the file stays on your computer.
