What the balance check means

How every conversion is reconciled against the balances printed on the statement, and what green, red and grey mean.

Last reviewed

Rather than quoting an accuracy figure, stmtai checks each conversion against the numbers your bank printed. The box at the top of the results page shows the outcome.

Three checks

  1. The balance equation. Opening balance plus all money in minus all money out must equal the printed closing balance. For a credit card the signs are reversed, because purchases raise what you owe.
  2. The running balance. Each row's printed balance must follow from the previous row's balance and this row's amount. The first row where it does not is the first suspect row.
  3. The count. If the statement prints how many transactions it contains, the table must have that many rows.

All comparisons are to the cent with no tolerance.

What the colours mean

Green, Balanced: every check passed. The box also says whether the transaction count matched when the statement printed one.

Red, Off by an amount: at least one check failed. The amount is the difference between the printed closing balance and the one computed from the rows. The first suspect row is linked and highlighted in the table. See Fix a flagged row.

Grey, Could not verify: the statement does not print opening and closing balances, so the totals cannot be compared. The rows may well be right, but the app cannot prove it.

Notes under the check

The check explains what it did and what it found:

  • Rows were reordered because the statement listed newest first.
  • The opening or closing balance was derived from the first or last running balance because the statement did not print it.
  • Totals match but the running balance breaks at a row, which usually means two rows with offsetting mistakes.
  • Money in or money out is off by an amount compared with the statement's own printed totals.
  • A specific row may have money in and money out swapped. This is spotted when the difference is exactly twice one row's amount.
  • The statement reports a number of transactions and the table has more or fewer.

After you edit

The check reruns on every edit and is labelled after your edits until you save. The downloads always use the table as it currently stands. In a batch, fixing one statement also updates the continuity check between statements.
