Files and formats
Which file types and statements are supported
PDF, PNG, JPG, CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and TXT are accepted, including scans and photos. File limits and what to do with anything else.
Last reviewed
The upload box accepts these extensions: .pdf, .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .csv, .qif, .ofx, .qfx and .txt. The extension decides how the file is read. Anything else is refused before upload with a message naming the file.
PDFs and images
PDFs and images are read visually, the way a person reads the page. That means a digital PDF from online banking, a scanned PDF and a phone photo are all handled the same way, and there is no per-bank template to choose. Any bank, credit card or brokerage cash statement in any country can be uploaded.
Statements that list the newest transactions first are put into date order automatically. The balance check notes when that happened.
Scans and photos work best when the whole page is in frame, the text is sharp and the page is flat. A blurry or skewed photo may still convert, but rows the reader was unsure about are shaded amber in the table with a note saying how many are worth a second look, and the balance check will show whether anything is off. If it is, see Fix a flagged row.
Password-protected or restricted PDFs are unlocked in your browser before upload; you are asked for the password only when the file needs one to open. See Password-protected PDFs.
Statements with more than one account
A combined statement (checking and savings in one PDF, or a business statement with a section per sub-account) is read as several accounts. Each section is checked against its own opening and closing balance and the results page shows them as a list, the same way a batch of files is shown, with the account number on each entry. The Excel download is one workbook with a sheet per account; QuickBooks and Xero files are per account, from each account's entry in the list. Pages are charged once for the file. A relationship summary or totals page that only lists the accounts is not treated as an account. See Convert several statements at once for how the list works.
Text exports
CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX and TXT files from your bank are read as text. They still get the same table, balance check and downloads. For pricing they count one page per 4,000 characters.
Limits
- 60 pages per file
- 20 MB per file
- 12 files per upload
A PDF over either limit is cut into parts of up to 60 pages on your device before upload, named "statement (part 1 of 3).pdf" and so on; they are converted together and the results page checks that each part carries on from the one before. The parts count towards the 12 files. An image or text file over 20 MB is refused, since it cannot be split. If a file contains only a summary page and no transaction list, the conversion fails with a message saying no transactions were found, and nothing is charged.
What is not supported
There is no way to convert a Word or Excel file, and no way to paste text. Convert those to PDF first and upload the PDF.
