Convert Wise statements to Xero.
Checked against the printed balances first.
Wise's own Xero export is a reasonable native option for a single currency balance.

Download the statement from Wise
- In the Wise app or at wise.com, open the currency balance (or Jar) you need.
- Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and choose "Statements and reports".
- Pick the document type: the statement as PDF, CSV or XLSX, or one of the accounting export formats.
- Set the date range, up to 365 days per statement; longer periods need several files.
- Enter your Wise password to confirm, then save the download.
- The same menu is reachable from your initials in the top corner, and a separate "Statement of fees" is offered alongside.
Then drop the file above. Several months at once is fine; each statement comes back as its own .csv file.
Before you upload: is the PDF password-protected?
Wise asks for your account password before it generates the file, but the PDF itself is not encrypted and opens freely once saved.
Wise and Xero
Wise's own Xero export is a reasonable native option for a single currency balance. Where it falls short is a business account with a dozen balances, or several years of files whose columns differ; converting each per-currency statement gives Xero one consistent CSV layout, with the Wise fee kept as its own line.
Wise gives you the statement in CSV and XLSX as well as PDF, plus accounting exports formatted for QuickBooks, Xero and others, all from the same menu and with a running balance included. That is a better native export than most banks manage, and for one currency over one year the CSV is fine to import directly. Two things send people to the PDF: the CSV column set has changed over the years, so older and newer files do not stack cleanly, and business accounts with many balances end up with a dozen files that all need the same tidy-up. Converting the PDFs gives you one consistent layout across currencies and years.
Import into Xero
- Drop the statement on the home page and confirm the balance check is green.
- Click Xero.
- In Xero: Accounting → Bank accounts → the account → Manage Account → Import a Statement.
- Upload the CSV. Xero recognises the columns; confirm and import.
- Reconcile as usual. The statement balance in Xero should match the printed closing balance.
What usually goes wrong
- Each currency balance is a separate statement, reconciled in that currency; the QuickBooks export sets the currency code (CURDEF) to match.
- Xero's importer is strict about date format and stops on the first bad row; ours uses the format Xero documents.
- Positive/negative convention: Xero wants money out negative. Bank PDFs print it positive in a "Withdrawals" column. We convert.
- Missing statements create reconciliation gaps for years. Convert a whole year at once and the batch Summary shows which months balanced.
None of this is bank-specific configuration. The balance check catches these cases for every bank; this list just explains what you will see on a Wise file.
Wise and Xero questions
I hold six currencies. Do I really need six statements?
Yes, and six ledger accounts to match. Each balance reconciles only in its own currency, and the converter sets the currency code in the QuickBooks export from the statement header so each file lands in the right account. Conversions between balances then post as transfers with the fee as a separate expense line.
Why is my Wise fee not in the exchange rate like at a bank?
Wise charges the fee explicitly and converts at the mid-market rate, so the fee prints as its own line on the statement of the currency you converted from. Book it as bank charges rather than burying it in an exchange gain or loss. The Statement of fees document summarizes them by month if you want a single figure.
Why CSV and not OFX for Xero?
Xero imports CSV and OFX. CSV lets you see and fix descriptions before import, and it is the format Xero recommends for statements that did not come from a feed.
Can I import several months at once?
Yes. Convert up to 12 statements together and download the merged CSV, or one CSV per statement.
Can I get Wise transactions into Xero without the bank's own export?
Yes. Download the statement PDF from Wise, drop it on this page and wait for the balance check, which compares the rows with the balances printed on the statement. Then download the Xero file and import it with the steps above. No Wise template is involved; the statement is read the way a person reads it, and the balance check is what tells you the rows are complete.
