How to download a NAB statement as a PDF
- Log in to NAB Internet Banking and open the account from the accounts list.
- Choose Statements from the account menu. Available statements are listed by period.
- Select the statement you need and choose Download.
- Save the PDF to your computer. Up to seven years of statements are available here.
- In the NAB app: open the account, tap Statements, choose the period and download. The app only shows the last two years, so go to Internet Banking for anything older.
Then drop the file above. Several months at once is fine; a year comes back as one workbook with a sheet per month.
Before you upload: is the PDF password-protected?

What NAB statements look like
Date, Particulars, Debits, Credits, Balance.
NAB statements use Date, Particulars, Debits, Credits and Balance, with dates written as day, abbreviated month and a two-digit year (03 Jul 25). Particulars is where the work is: a payment often takes two or three lines, the payee on one and a reference or receipt number below, and the converter joins them into a single description. There is an Opening Balance line and a Closing Balance line, and NAB also prints Total Debits and Total Credits at the end, which are used as a second check on the sums. Classic accounts are statemented every six months, so a single PDF can hold a couple of hundred rows; business accounts are usually monthly.
Where NAB statements trip up other converters
- "Particulars" often spans two lines with a reference number; merged into one description.
None of this is bank-specific configuration. The balance check catches these cases for every bank; this list just explains what you will see on a NAB file.
Why not just use NAB's own export?
Transaction history in NAB Internet Banking covers up to 731 days and can be exported from the Export link above the balance column as CSV, QIF or a PDF listing. The CSV includes a Balance column and a category, though the transaction detail is split awkwardly across Transaction Type and Transaction Details. NAB Connect business users get a Simple transaction history with running balances and an Advanced report with more formats. Past two years there is no export at all, only the statement archive, and that is the point at which converting the PDF becomes the practical option.
What you get back
- A green Balanced badge when the printed opening balance plus money in minus money out equals the printed closing balance, row by row. Or a red one pointing at the first row that does not add up, with a one-click swap if debit and credit look reversed.
- Click any misread cell, correct it, and the check re-runs before you download.
- Download Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.qbo), Xero CSV or Tally XML, whichever Xero imports best, with a suggested category on every row.

NAB questions
Why does one NAB transaction sometimes come out as two rows?
It should not, and if it does the file is worth sending in. NAB wraps Particulars across lines, and the parser uses the presence of a date and an amount to decide where a transaction starts. A wrapped line with no amount is appended to the row above. The running balance check catches the rare case where that goes wrong.
My six-monthly NAB statement is 30 pages. Is that a problem?
No. Long statements are common on Classic Banking accounts and the converter handles them as one document, stripping the repeated page headers and the carried-forward balance line at the top of each page. The row count and closing balance are checked against what NAB printed, so a page dropped by a flaky download is reported.
How do I convert a NAB statement PDF to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from NAB online banking or the app, drop it on this page, and wait about 10 to 40 seconds. You get every transaction in a table, a balance check against the printed opening and closing balance, and Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero and Tally XML downloads. The first 5 pages are free with no account.
Do I need a NAB template?
No. The statement is read the way a person reads it, so NAB layout changes do not break anything. What protects you is the balance check: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the printed closing balance, row by row.
Does it work with scanned NAB statements?
Yes. Scanned PDFs and phone photos are read visually. Blurry pages may produce a flagged row; the check tells you exactly which one to look at.
Can I import NAB transactions into Xero?
Yes. For Xero, download the Xero CSV and use Import a Statement on the bank account. Excel and CSV work everywhere else, including MYOB.
How many NAB statements can I convert at once?
Up to 12 files at a time, 60 pages each. A year of monthly statements comes back as one Excel workbook with an Overview sheet showing which months balanced, a sheet per month with a Category column, and a Categories sheet totalling the year by category.
What happens to my statement?
It is processed once and deletion is attempted as soon as processing finishes; an AWS lifecycle rule removes anything left behind. The extracted table becomes eligible for deletion after 7 days (1 day without an account). Nothing is used for training.
