Checked to the cent.

Drop a BMO Bank of Montreal PDF and get a clean spreadsheet, QuickBooks or Xero file in seconds. Every row is checked against the balances printed on the statement, so a misread is flagged, not hidden.

How to download a BMO statement as a PDF

  1. Sign in to BMO Online Banking and select the account from My Accounts.
  2. Open the account menu and choose Statements (labelled eStatements on some screens).
  3. Pick the statement date from the list. The PDF opens or downloads depending on your browser.
  4. Save it. Statements are archived for seven years from the time you enrolled in eStatements.
  5. In the BMO app: tap the account, then Statements & Documents, then the period, and use the save option.

Then drop the file above. Several months at once is fine; a year comes back as one workbook with a sheet per month.

Before you upload: is the PDF password-protected?

BMO eStatements are plain PDFs with no password. Some older combined business statements are image-based scans rather than text, but they are still not locked.

What BMO statements look like

Date, Description, Amounts deducted from your account, Amounts added to your account, Balance.

BMO puts an Opening balance line at the top of the table as if it were a transaction, with the figure in the Balance column and nothing in the amount columns; it is treated as the opening figure, not a row. The headings are Date, Description, Amounts deducted from your account, Amounts added to your account, Balance. Cheques show as "Cheque, No. 0123", Interac transfers as INTERAC e-Transfer Sent or Received, and the plan fee as a Plan Fee line. Dates are shown as short month and day, year from the header. Business clients sometimes receive a combined statement with several accounts in one PDF, each with its own opening and closing balance, and BMO occasionally drops a promotional notice between the summary and the table.

Where BMO statements trip up other converters

  • Statement may start with "Opening balance" as a row; it is used as the opening figure, not a transaction.

None of this is bank-specific configuration. The balance check catches these cases for every bank; this list just explains what you will see on a BMO file.

Why not just use BMO's own export?

On an account page, Download Account Details lets you choose Quicken, QuickBooks, Simply Accounting or Spreadsheet (CSV), and you can set a date range, but in practice it only reaches back a few months. Two things to know about the CSV: dates come out as a bare number like 20250522 rather than a date, and there is no balance column, so nothing to reconcile against. For the current quarter it is fine. For a prior year, or when the running balance is the point, the eStatement PDFs are the record that exists.

What you get back

  1. A green Balanced badge when the printed opening balance plus money in minus money out equals the printed closing balance, row by row. Or a red one pointing at the first row that does not add up, with a one-click swap if debit and credit look reversed.
  2. Click any misread cell, correct it, and the check re-runs before you download.
  3. Download Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.qbo), Xero CSV or Tally XML, whichever QuickBooks Online imports best, with a suggested category on every row.

BMO questions

My BMO business statement covers three accounts in one PDF. Do I get three sheets?

Yes, one per account, without splitting. Each section starts with its own Opening balance line and ends with its own closing balance, so the converter reads the PDF as three accounts and the workbook gets a sheet per account, each tied out against its own closing balance. If a section were ever missed, printing each account's pages to a separate PDF and uploading them together gives the same result.

Why is there an Opening balance row in the statement but not in my converted rows?

Because it is not a transaction. It is read as the opening figure and used to check that the first real row moves the balance correctly, then the closing balance is checked at the end. If you need it in the spreadsheet for your own workings, add it as a first line; the value is in the summary at the top of the statement.

Will the dates from a BMO CSV export, like 20250522, be fixed if I upload that instead?

Upload the PDF rather than the CSV. The statement carries proper dates and a balance column, and the conversion outputs real date cells. The CSV export is meant for accounting software imports and is the wrong starting point for a spreadsheet.

How do I convert a BMO statement PDF to Excel?

Download the statement PDF from BMO online banking or the app, drop it on this page, and wait about 10 to 40 seconds. You get every transaction in a table, a balance check against the printed opening and closing balance, and Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero and Tally XML downloads. The first 5 pages are free with no account.

Do I need a BMO template?

No. The statement is read the way a person reads it, so BMO layout changes do not break anything. What protects you is the balance check: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the printed closing balance, row by row.

Does it work with scanned BMO statements?

Yes. Scanned PDFs and phone photos are read visually. Blurry pages may produce a flagged row; the check tells you exactly which one to look at.

Can I import BMO transactions into QuickBooks Online?

Yes. Download the .qbo file and use Upload from file in QuickBooks Online, or Web Connect import in QuickBooks Desktop. Excel and CSV work everywhere else, including Google Sheets.

How many BMO statements can I convert at once?

Up to 12 files at a time, 60 pages each. A year of monthly statements comes back as one Excel workbook with an Overview sheet showing which months balanced, a sheet per month with a Category column, and a Categories sheet totalling the year by category.

What happens to my statement?

It is processed once and deletion is attempted as soon as processing finishes; an AWS lifecycle rule removes anything left behind. The extracted table becomes eligible for deletion after 7 days (1 day without an account). Nothing is used for training.
