How to download a CIBC statement as a PDF
- Sign on to CIBC Online Banking and select My Documents on the home page. On older layouts the link is View eStatements in the left sidebar.
- Under Account Documents, select Account statements.
- Choose the account, then the statement by date. The list shows 13 months by default; change the range to go back as far as 7 years.
- Selecting a statement downloads the PDF straight to your device.
- In the CIBC Mobile Banking app: More, then My documents, then Account statements, then the account and month.
Then drop the file above. Several months at once is fine; a year comes back as one workbook with a sheet per month.
Before you upload: is the PDF password-protected?
CIBC eStatement PDFs have no password. Open, check the month, upload.
What CIBC statements look like
Date, Description, Withdrawals ($), Deposits ($), Balance ($).
A CIBC chequing statement opens with a summary box giving the opening balance, total withdrawals, total deposits and closing balance, and the transaction table below starts with the opening balance as its first line and ends with the closing balance as its last. Columns are Date, Description, Withdrawals ($), Deposits ($), Balance ($). Point-of-sale rows put RETAIL PURCHASE and a reference number on the first line and the merchant on the second; bill payments carry a tracing number and the payee name, which is handy when a client asks which bill a payment was. Cheques read CHEQUE followed by the number, the service charge shows as a monthly fee line in the Withdrawals column, and a CIBC US Dollar account statement is issued on its own. Personal statements are two to three pages; a Business Operating Account with cheques runs longer.
Where CIBC statements trip up other converters
- Point-of-sale rows include the merchant on a second line; joined into one description.
None of this is bank-specific configuration. The balance check catches these cases for every bank; this list just explains what you will see on a CIBC file.
Why not just use CIBC's own export?
Under More on the Online Banking home page there is a Download Transactions option. You pick the account, a time period and a format: CSV, or a financial software choice that produces Quicken QFX or Money OFX. The period is limited to recent history and the file has no balance column, and CIBC eStatements are the only place the opening balance, total withdrawals, total deposits and closing balance are all stated together. For a month or two the export does the job; for a year, or for anything you plan to reconcile, convert the statements.
What you get back
- A green Balanced badge when the printed opening balance plus money in minus money out equals the printed closing balance, row by row. Or a red one pointing at the first row that does not add up, with a one-click swap if debit and credit look reversed.
- Click any misread cell, correct it, and the check re-runs before you download.
- Download Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.qbo), Xero CSV or Tally XML, whichever QuickBooks Online imports best, with a suggested category on every row.

CIBC questions
The merchant name on my CIBC statement is on a second line under RETAIL PURCHASE. Where does it go?
It is merged into the same description as the row above it, so each purchase is one line reading roughly RETAIL PURCHASE, the reference, then the merchant. Nothing is dropped; the row is just made readable.
Do the opening and closing balance lines in the CIBC table appear as transactions?
No. They are recognised as the period boundaries and used to check the running balance from first row to last. The summary box at the top carries the same figures, and if the table does not tie to them the conversion flags it rather than passing it through silently.
I can only see 13 months of statements. Is the rest gone?
It is still there. The Account statements list shows 13 months by default and has a range control to go back up to 7 years, or as long as you have held the account. Set the range first, then pick the months you need.
How do I convert a CIBC statement PDF to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from CIBC online banking or the app, drop it on this page, and wait about 10 to 40 seconds. You get every transaction in a table, a balance check against the printed opening and closing balance, and Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero and Tally XML downloads. The first 5 pages are free with no account.
Do I need a CIBC template?
No. The statement is read the way a person reads it, so CIBC layout changes do not break anything. What protects you is the balance check: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the printed closing balance, row by row.
Does it work with scanned CIBC statements?
Yes. Scanned PDFs and phone photos are read visually. Blurry pages may produce a flagged row; the check tells you exactly which one to look at.
Can I import CIBC transactions into QuickBooks Online?
Yes. Download the .qbo file and use Upload from file in QuickBooks Online, or Web Connect import in QuickBooks Desktop. Excel and CSV work everywhere else, including Google Sheets.
How many CIBC statements can I convert at once?
Up to 12 files at a time, 60 pages each. A year of monthly statements comes back as one Excel workbook with an Overview sheet showing which months balanced, a sheet per month with a Category column, and a Categories sheet totalling the year by category.
What happens to my statement?
It is processed once and deletion is attempted as soon as processing finishes; an AWS lifecycle rule removes anything left behind. The extracted table becomes eligible for deletion after 7 days (1 day without an account). Nothing is used for training.
