How to download a Halifax statement as a PDF
- Sign in to Halifax Online Banking and select the current account from the account overview.
- On the account page choose "Statement options", then the download option, and pick the statement period from the drop-down.
- Choose PDF and save the file; each statement period saves as its own document.
- Credit card statements cannot be downloaded from Halifax Online Banking at all; Halifax tells you to ask for a PDF through online chat or to use the app instead.
- In the Halifax app: open the account, tap the three-dot menu, then "Download or print statement", choose the month and year, and save. The app reaches back at least ten years against seven in Online Banking, and it is the only self-service route to card statement PDFs.
Then drop the file above. Several months at once is fine; a year comes back as one workbook with a sheet per month.
Before you upload: is the PDF password-protected?
Halifax statements saved from Online Banking or the app open without a password. Card statement PDFs sent after a chat request have also arrived unprotected on the ones we have handled; if a file does ask for one it was added after it left Halifax.
What Halifax statements look like
"Your Transactions" table headed Date, Description, Type, Money In (£), Money Out (£), Balance (£), bracketed by "Balance on" lines for the first and last day of the period.
A Halifax current account statement opens with a summary block reading "Balance on" the first day, Money In, Money Out and "Balance on" the last day, and those two dated balance lines are what the whole statement is checked against. The table beneath is headed "Your Transactions" with columns Date, Description, Type, Money In (£), Money Out (£), Balance (£), and the balance is printed on every line. Two things differ from the Lloyds statement it is often lumped with: Money In comes before Money Out, and the type code sits after the description rather than before it. Codes are the group set, DEB for debit card, FPI and FPO for Faster Payments in and out, DD, SO, TFR, BGC, CHG, plus a REWARD credit each month on Reward accounts and an account fee debit on Ultimate Reward. Dates are day-first with an abbreviated month. Statement periods are not always a calendar month; Reward accounts in particular can show a single PDF covering two or three months when activity is light. Personal statements run two to four pages, the last of which is usually interest rate and overdraft text rather than rows. Closed accounts get copy statements for five years after closure.
Where Halifax statements trip up other converters
- Money In is printed before Money Out, the opposite of Lloyds and most other UK banks; columns are read by heading, so the sign follows the label rather than the position.
- Statement periods do not always run a calendar month, and on quieter accounts one PDF can cover two or three months; the running balance on every row still ties from the first Balance on line to the last.
- Reward payments and the monthly account fee arrive as their own lines and are easy to mistake for interest; in the check they are ordinary credits and debits.
None of this is bank-specific configuration. The balance check catches these cases for every bank; this list just explains what you will see on a Halifax file.
Why not just use Halifax's own export?
Under "Statement options" there is an export choice that produces CSV or QIF for a date range you pick. The range is short: the Lloyds Banking Group platform generally offers a few months per file, though the picker on Bank of Scotland allows a tax year, so on Halifax check what the date boxes accept for your account rather than assuming. The CSV has Transaction Date, Transaction Type, Sort Code, Account Number, Transaction Description, Debit Amount, Credit Amount and Balance, so unlike many bank exports it does carry a balance per row. What it lacks is the statement framing: no "Balance on" opening line, no Money In and Money Out totals, and the type code sits in its own column rather than in the description your bank rules were written against. Halifax quotes seven years of statements in Online Banking and at least ten in the app, so for anything past the export window the PDF is the only complete record and it is the one that ties out.
What you get back
- A green Balanced badge when the printed opening balance plus money in minus money out equals the printed closing balance, row by row. Or a red one pointing at the first row that does not add up, with a one-click swap if debit and credit look reversed.
- Click any misread cell, correct it, and the check re-runs before you download.
- Download Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.qbo), Xero CSV or Tally XML, whichever Xero imports best, with a suggested category on every row.

Halifax questions
Why is Money In before Money Out on my Halifax statement when Lloyds prints them the other way round?
Halifax kept its own statement template when it joined Lloyds Banking Group, and the column order is one of the leftovers. It makes no difference to the result because columns are read by their headings: a figure under Money In becomes a credit and a figure under Money Out a debit whichever side of the page it sits on. The output uses the same column order for every bank, so Halifax and Lloyds sheets stack cleanly in one workbook.
My Halifax statement covers three months in one PDF. Should I split it before converting?
No need. The statement has one opening "Balance on" line and one closing "Balance on" line, and the running balance is printed on every row in between, so the whole period is checked as a single run. Convert it as one file and filter the sheet by month afterwards if you post monthly. Splitting it by hand would only remove the balance lines the check depends on.
Halifax only lets me get my credit card statement through the app. Does the app PDF convert like the website ones?
Yes. The app produces the same statement PDF Halifax would post, just delivered to your phone, and it is the only self-service route for card statements since Online Banking does not offer them. It is a card layout rather than the current account table: previous balance, payments, purchases, interest and new balance in a summary, with payments shown as credits. Convert it as a card statement and, if the signs come through reversed, the debit/credit swap sorts it in one click.
How do I convert a Halifax statement PDF to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from Halifax online banking or the app, drop it on this page, and wait about 10 to 40 seconds. You get every transaction in a table, a balance check against the printed opening and closing balance, and Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero and Tally XML downloads. The first 5 pages are free with no account.
Do I need a Halifax template?
No. The statement is read the way a person reads it, so Halifax layout changes do not break anything. What protects you is the balance check: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the printed closing balance, row by row.
Does it work with scanned Halifax statements?
Yes. Scanned PDFs and phone photos are read visually. Blurry pages may produce a flagged row; the check tells you exactly which one to look at.
Can I import Halifax transactions into Xero?
Yes. Download the .qbo file and use Upload from file in QuickBooks Online, or Web Connect import in QuickBooks Desktop. For Xero, download the Xero CSV and use Import a Statement on the bank account. Excel and CSV work everywhere else, including Sage, FreeAgent.
How many Halifax statements can I convert at once?
Up to 12 files at a time, 60 pages each. A year of monthly statements comes back as one Excel workbook with an Overview sheet showing which months balanced, a sheet per month with a Category column, and a Categories sheet totalling the year by category.
What happens to my statement?
It is processed once and deletion is attempted as soon as processing finishes; an AWS lifecycle rule removes anything left behind. The extracted table becomes eligible for deletion after 7 days (1 day without an account). Nothing is used for training.
