How to download a Starling statement as a PDF
- In the Starling app, tap the account icon in the top right to open the account menu.
- Tap 'Statements', then 'Statement history'.
- Pick a month from the list, or tap the custom option and set your own start and end dates.
- Choose PDF and then 'Standard' (or 'Certified' if a lender has asked for it), and save or share the file.
- In Online Banking at app.starlingbank.com, choose the account, then 'Statements', and download from there if you prefer working on a desktop.
Then drop the file above. Several months at once is fine; a year comes back as one workbook with a sheet per month.
Before you upload: is the PDF password-protected?
Starling statements are not password-protected, whether standard or certified. The certified version adds a signature block and a footer but the transaction table is identical.
What Starling statements look like
Clean single-table PDF: Date, Counter party, Reference, Type, Amount (GBP), Balance (GBP).
A Starling PDF statement is a single table headed Date, Counter party, Reference, Type, Amount (GBP), Balance (GBP), with a balance on every row and the amount signed. Dates are dd/mm/yyyy. The Type column uses words rather than codes: Faster Payment, Card Payment, Direct Debit, Interest. Business account statements are the same layout but you will see Spaces transfers labelled as such, and Starling Business customers on the paid Business Toolkit tier often have more categorised lines. Statements can start from the day the account was opened; there is no seven year cut-off.
Where Starling statements trip up other converters
- Counter party and Reference are joined into one description so your bank rules keep matching.
None of this is bank-specific configuration. The balance check catches these cases for every bank; this list just explains what you will see on a Starling file.
Why not just use Starling's own export?
The same Statement history screen offers CSV as well as PDF for any date range, which is how many Starling business customers feed Xero or FreeAgent when the bank feed is not enough. The CSV has counter party, reference, type, amount and balance columns, so it is more complete than most bank exports. Its weakness is that the counter party and the reference are separate fields, so your existing bank rules built on a single description may stop matching, and the type wording differs from the PDF. Convert the PDF if you want the description as printed and the layout consistent with your other banks.
What you get back
- A green Balanced badge when the printed opening balance plus money in minus money out equals the printed closing balance, row by row. Or a red one pointing at the first row that does not add up, with a one-click swap if debit and credit look reversed.
- Click any misread cell, correct it, and the check re-runs before you download.
- Download Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.qbo), Xero CSV or Tally XML, whichever Xero imports best, with a suggested category on every row.

Starling questions
Starling separates Counter party and Reference. What happens to them in Excel?
They are joined into one description with a space, counter party first, so a Faster Payment from a customer reads as the customer name followed by their invoice reference. If you need them apart again, the Starling CSV keeps them as two fields and stmtai accepts that file too.
Do Starling Spaces show up on the main statement?
Transfers into and out of a Space appear as lines on the main account statement. The movements inside a Space are on that Space’s own statement, which you can download from the Space itself. For most bookkeeping the main statement is enough; download the Space statement only if it earns interest you need to record.
My accountant wants a certified Starling statement. Does that convert differently?
No. The certified PDF has the same table with a signed declaration added, and the extra text is recognised as a footer. Convert whichever version you have; the rows and balances will be the same.
How do I convert a Starling statement PDF to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from Starling online banking or the app, drop it on this page, and wait about 10 to 40 seconds. You get every transaction in a table, a balance check against the printed opening and closing balance, and Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero and Tally XML downloads. The first 5 pages are free with no account.
Do I need a Starling template?
No. The statement is read the way a person reads it, so Starling layout changes do not break anything. What protects you is the balance check: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the printed closing balance, row by row.
Does it work with scanned Starling statements?
Yes. Scanned PDFs and phone photos are read visually. Blurry pages may produce a flagged row; the check tells you exactly which one to look at.
Can I import Starling transactions into Xero?
Yes. Download the .qbo file and use Upload from file in QuickBooks Online, or Web Connect import in QuickBooks Desktop. For Xero, download the Xero CSV and use Import a Statement on the bank account. Excel and CSV work everywhere else, including FreeAgent.
How many Starling statements can I convert at once?
Up to 12 files at a time, 60 pages each. A year of monthly statements comes back as one Excel workbook with an Overview sheet showing which months balanced, a sheet per month with a Category column, and a Categories sheet totalling the year by category.
What happens to my statement?
It is processed once and deletion is attempted as soon as processing finishes; an AWS lifecycle rule removes anything left behind. The extracted table becomes eligible for deletion after 7 days (1 day without an account). Nothing is used for training.
